In a recent competition sponsored by the Maryland Improvement Contractors Association and Chesapeake Home + Living Magazine, American Contracting won the 2014 Remodeler of the Year award for Commercial Renovation.
The Episcopal Housing Corporation, a not for profit company specializing in the development of low and moderate income housing opportunities, needed to expand its office space in Baltimore City. The Episcopal Diocese offered to give EHC a long term lease on the St. Mary’s Church Funeral Chapel located near 39th Street and Roland Avenue. Constructed many years ago it had been most recently used as a place for worship by a community church. The lease had expired and the Diocese was eager to have EHC move into the space.
EHC engaged Alan Brock, AIA, and Toni Scott of ArchTech Design to prepare a design and drawings for the renovation of the church into appropriate office space. Together with the staff of EHC and the staff of American Contracting a final plan was established. Critical to the design was to keep the feel of the tall ceilings and an overall open working space. The mechanical systems all needed to be upgraded. Special consideration was made for the HVAC and electrical systems were designed to accommodate the challenges of the renovation requirements.
The exterior also needed to be addressed in this project. New windows needed to be manufactured and installed, trim needed to be painted, pointing up of the masonry was necessary, and a new front and side doors needed to be custom made.
It was a great project for American to complete on behalf of a great organization providing housing opportunities in the City and surrounding communities.
