A favorite customer of ours referred us to a couple with a difficult problem. The wife had been just diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease). The couple needed to immediately modify their house (before picture above) to accommodate her quickly changing needs. After some discussion it was decided that the best solution for her accessibility needs was to create a first floor master bedroom suite with a fully accessible bathroom.

Our customer engaged the services of Ms. Melissa Clark of bluehouse architecture in Marriottsville, MD to design the space. Her challenges were not only the accessibility needs of the client but also to best take advantage of the views the house provided for a client who was an avid birdwatcher. Another primary consideration was access to the rear yard so that the client could leave her room to go outside in the most convenient way possible.

The bathroom was designed for maximum accessibility as our client was soon to be in a wheelchair. The shower had a linear drain from Schluter. The tile was from Hunt Valley Tile and Stone. Heated floors with a programmable thermostat was also from Schluter, their Ditra Heat product. Ferguson provided the lighting, accessories and wall sink. Carpet from the bedroom was sourced by Warehouse Tile and Carpet.
